Sledding in the snow | 495 CJDR in Lowell, MAIf you’re in the Boston, MA area and you’re looking for some winter fun, you’re in luck! There are plenty of places to enjoy winter activities in the area, whether you want to spend an hour sledding or go on a weekend skiing trip!

Here are a few places you can go to enjoy the winter the way you want:

Skiing and Snowboarding

Skiers and snowboarders, don’t fret — there are plenty of places near Boston to make a day trip to the slopes. The nearest resort is Blue Hills, about 40 minutes away from Boston. The trade-off is its size — it’s fairly small. But if you just have one day to spare, you can’t beat its location.

You might also want to check out Wachusett Mountain, about a one-hour drive away from Boston. It’s bigger than Blue Hills and has more challenging slopes. You’ll find six lifts that give you access to 19 trails. If you’re an intermediate-level skier, this resort might be the one for you.

Sledding

There’s no better way to spend the day with kids than heading to one of the local sledding spots. You don’t have to travel far from Boston to find a good place to sled — there are plenty of hills to take on in the city.

Take your pick from Larz Anderson Park, Corey Hill Outlook Park, Amory Park, the Arnold Arboretum, and more! There are gentle slopes for smaller children and steeper ones for people who want more speed. Explore the city to find your favorite sledding hill to make a yearly tradition!

Snowmobiling

Finding a good place to snowmobile requires a little driving, but nothing you couldn’t fit into a weekend trip!

Try Hopkinton State Park, about a 45-minute drive west from Boston. They allow snowmobiles when the snow is four inches deep, and they have quite a few multi-use trails to explore.

You might also enjoy the Douglas State Forest, which is about 60 miles southwest of Boston. It’s nearly 6,000 acres large and allows snowmobiles when the conditions allow for it. It only costs $9 for Massachusetts residents to get in and has trails you can take on confidently.

Ice Fishing

Arguably the least intense yet most relaxing winter sport is ice fishing. If you’re looking for peace and quiet on a frozen pond, there are some great sanctuaries for you near Boston.

The trick to finding a prime ice fishing spot is getting as far away from the city as you can. You want a good fishing spot that hasn’t been wiped out from a summer full of hordes of anglers. Try Winnisquam Lake in New Hampshire, about an hour and a half away, to catch some pickerel. Sign up with a fishing charter in western Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or Vermont. Some of the best ice fishing can be found in Cape Cod to the southeast.

One of the best parts about living this far north is the fantastic winters we get. Don’t hole up for the winter — get out and explore everything Massachusetts has to offer even during the coldest months!
