Lobster roll | 495 Chrysler Jeep Dodge RamAlthough it is true that you will find some of the best lobster rolls around in Maine, delicious versions of this New England staple dish can be enjoyed in many cities in the Greater Boston area. With such a great variety of choice, it is difficult to pinpoint the best lobster-roll joints. The three restaurants below, however, serve lobster rolls that you are bound to return for, time and time again.

The Hourly Oyster House

Named after the horse-drawn wagons, called “Hourlies” that departed for Boston on the hour each day, the Hourly Oyster House blends historical charm with a modern dining experience. This vibrant restaurant in Harvard Square serves only fresh and carefully selected seafood from New England and beyond, as well as cocktails, craft beers, and wines.  If you are into lobster, their lobster dishes include a lobster bisque, pan-roasted chili lobster, and lobster mac.

Then there is also their lobster roll, which is one of the best in the greater Boston area. The meat consists of a mix of tail, claw, and knuckle, which is tossed with salt, pepper, and just a dash of mayo, and then topped with chopped chives, celery leaves, and fresh lemon zest. It is served on a brioche roll with a side of fries, or half greens and half fries.

The Hourly Oyster House is located at 15 Dunster St., Cambridge.

Five Island Lobster Co.

Five Island Lobster Co. is located on an active fishing wharf in Sheepscot Bay, Georgetown, which is surrounded by some of the coldest and deepest waters on this coast, producing top-grade, delicious lobster. This company consists of the “Love Nest” grill, where you can snack on fried seafood baskets and grilled sandwiches, and the “Ice Cream” building, where you can buy scoops of Annabelle’s ice cream.

Then there is also the “Lobster” building, where delicious haddock chowder, steamed clams, or delectable lobster rolls are on the menu. All lobster served is pulled daily from the surrounding waters, so you are assured of the freshest, top-quality meat on your lobster roll. In order for the lobster meat to be the king of the dish it is tossed with only a bit of home-made mayo, and served on a buttered split-top bun, lined with lettuce.

Rye Harbor Lobster Pound

This little seafood shack at Rye Harbor uses only fresh-off-the-boat lobster and fish in its dishes. The locals swear that the lobster roll served at Rye Harbor Lobster Pound is better than any you will find in Maine. Traditionally,  lobster salad rolls are served with cold lobster meat and mayo, but not at this joint.  Although you can get the traditional lobster salad roll here, Rye Harbor also serves a hot one. And the lobster meat is not just drizzled with hot butter: It is sauteed in butter and sherry and served on a crisp, toasted split-top bun.

Rye Harbor Lobster Pound is located at 1870 Ocean Blvd., Rye, New Hampshire.

If you love a top-quality, fresh lobster roll, you should try to visit one of these lobster joints. You are bound to get hooked!
