Salem Witch Trials Memorial welcoming sign | 495 Chrysler Jeep Dodge RamSalem is probably best-known for the Salem witch trials that took place in 1692-93, so it comes as no surprise that much of the city’s cultural identity reflects this event. There are plenty of attractions and events to visit that will inform you about this particular period of the city’s history.

Salem, however, also offers other kinds of attractions that are worth a visit, as well as top-class restaurants where you can enjoy the local seafood, or just about any other cuisine you desire. Here are some places to check out if you are in Salem this fall.

Salem’s Haunted Houses and Attractions

There are a few things that will get your blood flowing quicker on a cool, fall day, than a good adrenaline-fueled scare. Visit Gallows Hill where you can enjoy a walking tour, or try the Gallows Hill main show, which is an interactive theater production that will not only teach you about the witch trials but also about local ghosts and legends. Or board the Ghosts & Legends ride for an eerie — and slightly comical — journey through the dark streets of Salem.

There’s also Salem’s Witch Village, which offers attractions such as The Salem Wax Museum of Witches and Seafarers that exhibits wax likenesses of interesting figures in Salem’s history. It also contains Frankenstein’s Castle, where you can experience the dark side of human nature. Or if you prefer the real thing, attend the Witching Hour, where a real witch will give you some insight into the world of magic and spells.

Salem Willows Park

For entertainment that is not quite so scary, take the family to Salem Willows Park. This oceanfront park offers plenty of fun and lots of good food. At the Willows Arcade, you can enjoy some old-fashioned games such as “Pac Man,” or play the latest high-tech games. If you want to get your feet moving, go for air hockey, the NBA hoop shoot, or the Wiffle Ball batting cage. There are also rides available, including a simulated roller-coaster ride and bumper cars.

For a more laid-back day with the family, visit the Waterfront Park where you can enjoy a picnic in the fall sun, fish from a pier, or just go for a relaxed stroll along the park paths. After all this activity, you and the family are bound to be hungry. Grab a delectable pizza slice from Peppy’s Pizza, tasty fried clams from Clam Shack, or enjoy shrimp or scallops at Cappy’s Seafood.

Excellent Restaurants

Salem is home to some amazing restaurants. If you are in the mood for local seafood, try the Sea Level Oyster Bar, where you will also enjoy a beautiful view of the north shore. Or if you feel like snacking on some nachos and cheese, a great risotto, or a pulled-pork sandwich in front of a roaring fire with a craft cocktail in hand, be sure to pop in at the Tavern on the Green.

If you are in Salem this fall, you are sure to find the perfect attraction or restaurant to help you forget the slight chill.
