Cannolis | 495 CJDRBoston is home to so much amazing food, it’s impossible to try everything. Sure, you could head down to some of the top tourist destinations, but so many of them are over-hyped or just so crowded that they can’t be fully enjoyed. Through the years, Boston has become a melting pot for many different cultures, and because of this, there are tons of foods you have to try. Here are some of the best spots to try some of Boston’s most sought after dishes.

  1. Cannoli

The North End of Boston is home to some spectacular Italian cuisine. One of the specialties you’ll surely run into is the cannoli. These crunchy pastry shells filled with a ricotta cheese based cream are always a huge hit. In the North End, you’ll find two rivaling pastry shops. These, of course, are Mike’s Pastry and Modern Pastry.

Go ahead and try them both to see what side of the coin you land on. However, there is a third option, and the pastries there are just as, if not more, delicious. Bova’s, which is a little bit deeper into the North End is a true hidden gem. The desserts are downright addicting, and unlike the main street monsters such as Mike’s and Modern, Bova’s won’t require you to fight through the crowds. So grab some cash and head into the North End for an evening of delicious treats.

  1. Clam Chowder

Another dish Boston is known for is New England style clam chowder. You’ll find it at just about every restaurant that serves seafood, but there are a couple of spots where amazing chowder is flowing at all times. If you want to hit up a touristy spot along the freedom trail, the chowder at the Union Oyster House is top notch. Grab some fried calamari to go on the side and you’re in business. Plus, the location has the distinction of being America’s oldest continuously operating restaurant.

However: if you’re a Boston native, or make your way into the city frequently, there’s another bowl of clam chowder you must try. The Barking Crab, which is in the Fort Point district near the Children’s Museum has some of the most succulent chowder in town. You won’t regret hopping into this dive bar for some of their top-notch chowder.

  1. Lobster Rolls

If you don’t mind driving a bit outside of Boston, your options for amazing lobster rolls are practically unlimited. Inside the city, make your way back to the North End to Neptune Oyster bar. This small and cramped venue is well worth sitting shoulder to shoulder, as the Connecticut style (hot with butter) rolls are regarded as some of the best ever.

Or, you can venture to the north shore, where restaurants such as Kelly’s Roast Beef and Anchor Pub offer incredible lobster roll interpretations of their own. Lastly, Tony’s Clam Shop is located in the southern city of Quincy. They serve lobster rolls that are well worth the drive.

Boston is home to a limitless selection of amazing food choices. You owe it to yourself to take a food pilgrimage to every single one of the restaurants listed above. Your taste buds will thank you!
