Some parks may even have opportunities to teach you a thing or two. Here are some parks around Lowell, Massachusetts, that you can explore the next time you are looking for some relaxation.

  1. Lowell National Historic Park

Lowell’s history was built on water-powered textile mills that helped propel the Industrial Revolution. These mills gave life to the city almost 200 years ago, and this historic park celebrates that history. 

If you are looking for a relaxing walk, you can enjoy walking the waterways of the canal system that powered the textile mills. Today, almost all of the six miles of canals remain functional. The park has four trails that you can walk ranging from one mile to 1.6 miles. For a map and more information about the trails, you can take a look at the Lowell Waterways brochure.

While at the park, you may want to take advantage of the other activities going on. There are a few tour options you can try, such as the Mill and Trolley Tour, or the Working Water Tour. They also host special events so that you can keep an eye out for any upcoming events at the park too. Lowell National Historic Park is located at 67 Kirk Street.

  1. Shedd Park

Shedd Park has 50-acres with space for visitors to play sports at the tennis courts and baseball diamonds. There’s also a water spray park where you can bring your family to play during the summer. The spray park is typically open from noon-4 p.m. on weekends from Memorial Day until June 30, and then from noon- 6 p.m. seven days a week until Labor Day.

With plenty of picnic tables, you can enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the sun while you enjoy a meal and play with your family. There’s also playground equipment! The park is located at 453 Rogers Street.

  1. Lowell Heritage State Park

This park is a historical site that takes you around the network of canals located in Lowell. There is a 2-mile waterfront stretch that gives visitors opportunities for boating here.

Visitors who enjoy boating can explore the mills along the canal on a relaxing boat ride; both non-motorized and motorized boating is allowed. There’s also swimming behind the bathhouse where you can cool down during the summer!

Other activities you can enjoy while at the park include fishing, hiking, and biking. There’s a visitor center you can visit for more information about the park, which is located at 160 Pawtucket Boulevard.

These are just three of many parks around Lowell! Other parks you may want to try are the Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsborough State Forest, which spans between three towns and has over six miles of trails and ponds for fishing! There’s the Rogers Fort Hill Park or Boarding House Park, as well. Wherever you decide to go, you will be sure to find a spot for a relaxing day in Lowell!
