The 4xe powertrain was introduced to Jeep's Wrangler lineup in 2021, marking the legendary SUV brand's first-ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). In the present day, the 4xe powertrain is now available for both the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, while Jeep has laid plans to make it available to the entire lineup. As with most plug-in hybrids, Jeep 4xe models come with a series of drive modes, which give the driver the authority to choose how the vehicle is powered and monitor fuel and electricity consumption. How is the Jeep 4xe Lineup Powered?
As we mentioned above, Jeep 4xe is a plug-in hybrid powertrain. All PHEVs include a gas-powered engine, at least one electric motor, and a rechargeable battery pack, making them the perfect go-between for drivers looking to make the switch from gas to electric. The 4xe powertrain consists of a turbocharged two-liter four-cylinder engine, an engine-mounted electric motor, a transmission-mounted electric motor, and a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack. The name 4xe stands for four-by-electric. This is because all Jeep 4xe models come equipped with 4x4. The Wrangler 4xe lineup comes with Selec-Trac full-time 4x4, while the Grand Cherokee lineup features Quadra-Trac I 4x4. Meanwhile, the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe comes with Rock-Trac 4x4 for better off-roading capabilities, while select Grand Cherokee 4xe models are eligible for Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with an electronic limited-slip rear differential.
What is the Jeep 4xe's Default Drive Mode?
The first and default E-Selec drive mode is Hybrid. Hybrid mode seamlessly blends gas and electric power. In Hybrid mode, the 4xe system uses its electric motors to send power to the wheels instantly, providing immediate throttle response. Additional power is provided by the turbocharged engine. When the vehicle is coasting, the gas engine will disengage, running solely on electric power. When the accelerator pedal is pressed, the gas engine will kick back on to provide the additional power being requested. In Hybrid mode with a full tank of gas and fully charged battery, the Wrangler 4xe can be driven up to 370 miles, while the Grand Cherokee 4xe can go up to 470 miles. Keep in mind that this is under normal driving conditions and does not include off-roading or high-speed driving.
Jeep 4xe Electric Mode
The E-Selec system's Electric mode entirely disengages the turbocharged engine for near-silent, emissions-free driving. There are numerous benefits to driving in electric mode, the first of which is fuel savings, as it shuts off fuel flow to the engine. Plus, switching to Electric mode gets you the instant torque response that electric power is known to provide, making it easy to crawl over rocks on the trails or merge onto the highway. With a fully charged battery, the Wrangler 4xe provides up to 21 miles of all-electric driving. Meanwhile, the Grand Cherokee 4xe can be driven up to 25 miles with zero tailpipe emissions.
What Happens when my Jeep 4xe Battery Dies?
The reason PHEVs are so popular is that you can keep on driving even after the battery is depleted, thanks to the gas-powered engine. When you switch into E-Save mode, the electric motors are disengaged, powering the drivetrain with gas power only. This allows you to save the battery power for a later time and recharge it through regenerative braking. E-Save mode is automatically engaged when the battery pack is depleted. Regenerative braking is the system an electric vehicle uses to send power back to the battery pack to increase or maintain its charge. It does this by reversing the direction of the electric motors while the vehicle is decelerating, sending the electricity back to the battery pack. While in E-Save mode, you can engage Jeep's Max Regen feature, which provides more electricity for the battery by harnessing the kinetic energy created by braking, converting it into electrical energy, and delivering it back to the battery pack.
