If you've been paying attention to the trends in the automotive industry in recent years, you've probably noticed that electric vehicles are playing a more prominent role in manufacturers' lineups. With more EVs popping up each model year, you'll find that more EV charging stations are popping up as well at shopping centers, event stadiums, highway rest areas, and other places. Owning an EV makes you a part of a community, and a big part of that community is found at charging stations. To make this community enjoyable for everyone, there are a few things that drivers should keep in mind as they visit charging stations. Please continue reading below to learn more about some tips to help keep EV charging stations pleasant for everybody.

Use Spots for Charging Only

EV charging stations oftentimes have their own area in a parking lot or rest station with clearly marked signage saying that it's for EV charging only. However, there are still some cases of people with gas-powered cars parking in these spots as well as EVs without charging. If you own an EV but aren't in need of a charge, these spots should still be considered off-limits. Only using the charging spots for when you need to charge your vehicle frees up the spot for someone who does need a charge. Of course, only using these spots is the morally correct thing to do. However, drivers who park in these spots without charging can be subject to towing of their vehicle and a fine for ignoring the posted signs.

Make Sure You Use the Correct Charger

This tip is especially true for owners of plug-in hybrid vehicles. You should always pay attention to the charging cord that you're plugging into your vehicle. Most charging stations are equipped with Level 2 EV chargers, which work well for giving PHEVs a quick charge. However, more and more Level 3 DC Fast Chargers are being installed at the same stations as Level 2 chargers. PHEV owners should pay close attention to this, as Level 3 chargers aren't designed for PHEVs just yet. If you do own a fully-electric vehicle, however, Level 3 charging is a great way to get a quick charge and get back on the road, which also frees up the Level 2 chargers for PHEV owners. Another important tip for using a charging station is to charge your vehicle for your immediate driving needs. For example, if you're just looking to get enough power to get you home, don't leave your car plugged in longer than you need to. Conversely, if you're on a long road trip and need a good amount of range to get to the next charging station, then be sure to get the power that you need.

Never Unplug Another EV

This tip should go without saying. However, it is important, so we will still cover it. While it should go without saying, you should always remember to never unplug another EV owner's car while it is charging. The Golden Rule applies here. It is perfectly normal for EV owners to leave their vehicle while it is plugged in, which is why there are charging stations being installed at malls and grocery stores. Many manufacturers are putting locks on the vehicle's charging port to prevent unplugging by other people. Many experienced EV owners may advise you to leave a note while your vehicle is plugged in, saying that you will be back shortly. If you see a note like this on someone else's vehicle, leave it be and wait for the next available charging station.
