PHEV Setup of the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger
At the heart of the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger's power is the renowned Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine that has been the Ram 1500's standard engine since 2011. In the Ramcharger, however, an onboard generator accompanies the engine, converting the engine's mechanical energy into electrical energy. The front axle features a 250-kilowatt (kW) EDM, while the rear is home to a 238-kW EDM. Meanwhile, a 92-kilowatt-hour battery pack found beneath the rear floorboard powers both the EDMs. Ram strategically placed the battery to make way for a flat loadspace floor and keep it protected from the elements. The Ramcharger's battery can be charged with Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 chargers. By using a 400-volt Level 3 DC Fast Charger, the battery can gain up to five miles of charge per minute. Additionally, the Ramcharger targets a total driving range of up to 690 miles!
Does the Ramcharger's V6 Engine Power the Wheels Directly?
Technically, the Ramcharger's Pentastar engine ends up powering the wheels. However, there is no mechanical linkage between it and the wheels. This is because of the onboard generator positioned between the V6 engine and the electric drive modules. The process begins with mechanical energy being created by the driver pressing the gas pedal. This energy is harnessed by the generator, which, in turn, translates it into electrical energy and distributes it to the battery or the EDMs. However, the Ramcharger gives you the ability to choose how the wheels are powered. For example, you can solely run on battery power for maximum efficiency, gas power, or a blend of both for maximum power. In all-electric mode, the V6 engine can be used to provide electrical energy through the onboard generator to recharge the battery while it drives the wheels. When the battery is depleted, however, the wheels can be driven by the V6 engine with power sent through the generator. Additionally, when both the battery and V6 engine are used to power the wheels, the Ramcharger achieves its maximum power output.
Ram 1500 Ramcharger's Power in Numbers
The Ram 1500 Ramcharger bursts onto the PHEV segment of the full-size pickup class with impressive power and capability to the tune of 663 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque. Of course, these numbers sound great on paper, but you may be wondering how they translate into real-world capability. Allow us to answer that question for you. The Ramcharger's power affords it a towing capacity of 14,000 pounds, a payload capacity of 2,625 pounds, and a heart-pounding 0-60 time of just 4.4 seconds. With the front and rear EDMs, the Ramcharger comes standard with four-wheel drive. However, it features a front wheel-end disconnect, which allows the front wheels to spin freely, powering only the rear wheels when road conditions are ideal. When driving on less-than-ideal road conditions, like snow, loose gravel, and mud, the front wheels will reengage to provide maximum traction. Ram used the STLA Frame platform for the Ramcharger, carefully designed solely for full-size electric vehicles with a body-on-frame design. This high-strength steel frame provides the optimal balance of stiffness, rigidity, and durability while remaining lightweight. The battery is protected by the frame rails, which are widened in its mid-section for full-size EVs to make way for the battery pack. Aiding in the Ramcharger's performance and capability is the four-corner active leveling air suspension system. This system has full height adjustments with the Normal, Aero, Enter/Exit, Off-Road 1, and Off-Road 2 modes, allowing the driver to select the perfect ride height for any driving scenario.
