The electric vehicle segment is expanding at a rapid pace. With more models joining the market each year, many drivers have already made the transition to get better fuel efficiency and reduce their carbon emissions. However, there are also many drivers hesitant to make the switch because they are unsure of what owning an electric vehicle entails. By nature, we as humans tend to shy away from the unknown. There are a variety of chargers for EVs that provide different benefits. Level 1 EV Charger
The first type of EV charger is a Level 1, which comes with the purchase of a new EV. At one end of a Level 1 charging cable is an SAE 1772 connector that plugs into the vehicle. At the other end, you'll see a three-prong plug that connects to a traditional 120-volt home outlet. Level 1 chargers provide approximately 1.2 kilowatts. This gives a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) a full charge in 6-12 hours and a battery electric vehicle (BEV) a full charge in 20-40 hours. Charging times depend on the battery's size; the larger the battery, the longer it takes to charge. Owners using a Level 1 charger typically plug their vehicle in overnight, giving it adequate charge for everyday driving the next day while avoiding overcharging.
Level 2 EV Charger
Many BEV and PHEV owners choose to purchase a Level 2 charger. Whereas a Level 1 charger plugs into a traditional household outlet, a Level 2 charger can either be plugged into a 240-volt outlet, like the one used for household appliances, or hardwired into the home's electrical system for greater efficiency. By having a Level 2 charger installed, owners achieve roughly 7.6 kilowatts, which charges a PHEV in an hour and a half to four hours and a BEV in four to nine hours. Jeep has partnered with Qmerit to provide 4xe owners with Level 2 charging station installation.
Level 3 EV Charger
A Level 3 EV charger is also known as Direct Current (DC) Fast Charging. As of now, DC fast charging is only available for BEVs and only available at certain public charging stations. However, more Level 3 chargers are being installed in more locations. Using direct current, a Level 3 charger provides up to 350 kW, giving a BEV 80% of charge in as quick as 15 minutes. This allows drivers to spend more time driving and less time waiting for the vehicle to charge. DC Fast Chargers can most commonly be found at rest areas along interstate highways.
What is Regenerative Braking?
It may sound a bit out there, but an EV can charge its own battery. Using a process called regenerative braking. Regenerative braking turns kinetic energy into chemical energy that is stored in the vehicle's batteries. When the driver applies the brakes, the electric motors will immediately switch into reverse mode, slowing down the wheels while also sending electricity that would otherwise be used to power the wheels forward back to the battery. This gives drivers two main benefits. First, it allows the battery to increase or maintain its own state of charge. And second, it reduces strain on the brakes, extending their life and saving you money on maintenance costs.
