Over the years, the Jeep Wrangler's off-roading capability has surpassed that of any other vehicle in the automotive industry. Stories of its off-road prowess have been told the world over. As the Jeep brand continues to march into the future, the Wrangler has evolved, and the newly available Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid lineup has started to conquer the trails and write its own stories. Jeep Wrangler 4xe Powertrain
The Wrangler 4xe is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). Therefore, its propulsion system uses a blend of gas and electric power. The gas power is provided by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. Jeep chose this engine for its efficiency and low-end torque output. The electric power begins with an electric motor mounted to the front of the engine to replace the alternator. This provides the engine with seamless stop-start function at idle and maximizes regenerative braking. The second electric motor is inside the transmission, taking the place of the torque converter to provide the wheels with instantaneous torque. This sends power to the instantly, making it easy for the Wrangler 4xe to pass over rugged terrain more smoothly. The electric motors are powered by a 400-volt, 17.3-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. While regenerative braking is used to charge the battery while on the move, it gets most of its power by being plugged in with a Level 1 or Level 2 EV charger. Of course, water and electricity don't mix. That's why Jeep gave the electric motors, battery pack, and all electrical connections water-tight seals.
What 4x4 System Does the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Use?
Since its 1984 introduction, the Wrangler has always come standard with a legendary Jeep 4x4 system. While the systems have evolved over the years, the Wrangler's legendary capability has remained the same. The Wrangler 4xe comes standard with Jeep's Selec-Trac 4x4 system. Selec-Trac is a full-time 4x4 system designed to provide drivers with optimal performance on all driving surfaces. On smooth, dry roads, the Selec-Trac transfer case will run in two-wheel drive to maximize fuel efficiency. When the Wrangler 4xe encounters snow, ice, mud, loose gravel, or other less-than-ideal conditions, the transfer case will automatically shift into four-wheel drive to maximize traction. This happens without any driver intervention. Selec-Trac features full-time four-wheel drive mode, which automatically adjusts torque distribution between the front and rear wheels to maintain optimal traction at all times. Meanwhile, the transfer case also offers 4-High and 4-Low modes. Selecting 4-HI is best when driving on snow, mud, or ice. Meanwhile, 4-LO is better suited for tackling rugged off-road trails with rocks, steep inclines, and other rough terrain. These modes can be selected by the driver using a center console-mounted lever.
What is Special About the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe?
Introduced in 1997, the Wrangler Rubicon takes the Wrangler's impressive off-roading abilities to new heights. So naturally, Jeep had to include it in the Wrangler 4xe lineup. Like the traditional Wrangler Rubicon, the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe comes standard with Rock-Trac 4x4. This system provides the Wrangler Rubicon 4xe with better low-speed crawling control, making it ideal for extreme off-road driving. Selecting the 4-HI mode provides a 50/50 torque split between the front and rear axles to provide excellent traction on slippery terrain. Meanwhile, the Rubicon's 4-LO mode provides a 4:1 transfer case gear ratio. This means that for every four rotations of the transmission output shaft, the transfer case output shaft will rotate once. The result of this is higher amounts of torque at low speeds, giving drivers better control while crawling over jagged terrain at the low speeds required on off-road trails. Rock-Trac's 4-LO mode also locks the front and rear axles, moving the wheels at the same time to maximize momentum. The Wrangler Rubicon offers many other off-roading features and equipment, such as 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac all-terrain tires, additional underbody skid plates made of high-strength steel, an electronically disconnecting front sway bar, FOX shock absorbers, a factory lift, and much more.
